How to Track WhatsApp Conversions with GA4 and GTM

To measure WhatsApp conversions, clicks on the WhatsApp link on the website (wa.me or api.whatsapp.com) are captured with a click trigger in Google Tag Manager, sent to GA4 as an event, and that event is marked as a conversion in both GA4 and Google Ads. This lets you report which campaign brought how many WhatsApp conversations.

For most local businesses the first contact comes via WhatsApp. But unless those clicks are measured, there's no answer to “which ad is working?” Here's the setup we use.

1. Connect GA4 and Google Tag Manager

Add the Google Tag Manager container to the site and publish the GA4 configuration tag through GTM. Managing all measurement from one place makes life easier later.

2. A trigger for the WhatsApp click

Create a new Click - Just Links trigger in GTM. Condition: Click URL contains wa.me or api.whatsapp.com. This covers all WhatsApp buttons on the site.

3. Send a GA4 event

Set up a GA4 Event tag; event name whatsapp_click, trigger the click above. Add parameters like page path if you want.

4. Mark it as a conversion in GA4

In GA4 → Admin → Events, mark the whatsapp_click event as a “key event (conversion)”.

5. Connect to Google Ads

In Google Ads → Goals → Conversions → Import from GA4, add the whatsapp_click conversion. Now you can see the cost per WhatsApp conversation in the campaign report.

6. Test

Use GTM Preview mode and GA4 DebugView to make a few clicks and confirm the event fires. Repeat the same method for phone (tel:) buttons under the name phone_click.

This setup is a standard part of my Conversion Tracking service and the first step in ad management projects.
